Russell Brand Discusses DMT on 'The Trews" and Makes Appearance at Europe's Largest Psychedelics Conference
Russell Brand, actor, activist, and recovering drug addict, spoke about DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine, hallucinogenic compound in the South American brew ayahuasca) on his July 24 episode of The Trews, after making an appearance at Breaking Convention, Europe's largest psychedelics conference.

Due to a politically-driven DEA Schedule I classification (unsafe, no medical use) that has existed since the early 1970s, human research on these substances were essentially nonexistent until landmark studies at Johns Hopkins University almost a decade ago.
Classic hallucinogens (psychedelics) are again relevant in human brain research, showing early promise in trials to treat number of psychological illnesses.
Mainstream psychiatry has called for increased research, presumably to aid a mental health field that has not seen improvement in treatment options in over 40 years and to also prevent states from taking health matters into their own hands (i.e. marijuana).
"We have had a nearly 50-year hiatus in any serious investigation, except for some heroic investigators at a few universities, primarily in Europe but also in the United States."
The first classic hallucinogen indication being pursued in the United States is to treat existential and spiritual distress in cancer patients, a condition that does not respond well to existing medication. Other patients suffer from unmet mental health and spiritual needs, such as homebound older adults. Breaking Convention is a multidisciplinary conference on psychedelic consciousness featuring more than 130 presenters from around the world (Facebook page).
According to the event organizer:
"We spent months asking him, through various agents, if he wanted to come to speak at Breaking Convention, but heard nothing back from him. Then I was wandering around outside the entrance of Greenwich university towards the end of Sunday afternoon looking for somewhere to go for a pint between talks when my nephew spotted Russell, who said,"
'Alright lads, is that Breaking Convention thingy somewhere round here?'
"We showed him in (I gave him Professor David Nutt's name badge to wear as I had it my pocket) and he gave this talk. The last one of the conference. A lovely end to an awesome gig."
Sharing the table with author Daniel Pinchbeck, Brand gave thoughts on Donald Trump and Uber, then expressed that we are the source of the ayahuasca vision:
"The resources exist in human beings. Like the woman up there said. Ayahuasca is communicating through us. We, too, are divine goddess consciousness. It's in us all. We are it already. All we have to do is create the avenues for its expression through narrative."
Russell muscled through difficult questions from a well-read audience:
